Phil Mickelson has nice walk with daughters after British Open finish (vids)
Phil Mickelson saw a fantastic final round of the Open Championship come to an abrupt halt when an errant tee shot on the 17th hole found a balcony on the Old Course Hotel. Thankfully for Mickelson, he had his daughters on hand following his finish at 18 to life his spirits.
As Lefty walked off the course, Amanda and Sophia joined him as he continued his post-round stroll (via For the Win).
While it was a long shot at best that Mickelson was going to put up a round to outpace the golfers ahead of him on the leaderboard to win another major, he was somewhat in the hunt heading to the tee at 17. Sitting at 6-under for the day, Mickelson found himself only two strokes off the pace the leaders set on Sunday. But an awful tee shot — one where golfers have to hit over the hotel — found a balcony, and his brilliant round was thwarted with a triple-bogey 7 at the par-4 Road Hole.
Mickelson did par the 18th, finishing his final round with a 3-under 69 and 7-under for the tournament, leaving him well short of a top-10 finish with plenty of golfers still out navigating the Old Course.
But in the end, where he ultimately lands on the leaderboard matters little given how any spirits dampened with how he finished were instantly lifted thanks to the arm-in-arm stroll with his girls.
