Henrik Stenson appears to troll Tiger Woods with talk of ‘tired glutes’
Henrik Stenson was feeling pretty good after firing a 5-under 65 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, an excellent round good enough to land him in a tie for first with Dustin Johnson heading into Friday’s action. So much so, in fact, that he appeared to troll Tiger Woods during his post-round comments.
While Stenson was basking in the afterglow of some brilliant play, Woods, meanwhile, struggled mightily. And to characterize his nightmarish round in such a manner may be a drastic understatement. The once-dominant golfer at times looked clueless as he clumsily navigated the challenging Chambers Bay course while carding a 10-over 80, his worst round ever at a U.S. Open.
Stenson, while assessing the grueling conditions of Chambers Bay that includes plenty of elevation changes, not to mention some pretty long treks to traverse between holes — including scaling and descending a bevy of staircases scattered around the grounds — mentioned something about how it may adversely affect some golfers.
Henrik Stenson with the most trolling quote of the year: "It's a challenging walk. There will be some tired glutes by the end of the week."

There is virtually no chance that Stenson was not commenting upon what Woods had to say earlier this year after withdrawing from the Farmers Insurance Open, making the following oddly specific quote: “It’s just my glutes are shutting off,” he said. “Then they don’t activate and then … it goes into my lower back. So, I tried to activate my glutes as best I could, in between, but they just never stayed activated.”
Those comments spawned a bevy of mocking consternation about Woods and the activation of his glutes and it clearly looks like Stenson was having a little fun at Woods’ expense. But it’s not like Tiger needs any help with the gallows humor, as he humorously summarized his performance on Thursday by making note that he at least outplayed one of his playing partners.
“The bright side is I kicked Rickie’s butt today,” he said of Fowler, who played poorly as well, carding an 11-over 81.
But Woods quickly became serious after his joke.“It was a tough day,” he said. “I just couldn’t get it turned around today. I’m trying as hard as I can but for some reason i just can’t get consistency. But I’ll keep working, keep grinding.”
