Warriors give Game 1 tickets to 105-year-old superfan nicknamed ‘Sweetie’
A Golden State Warriors fan who is nearing 106 years old that has the fantastic nickname of “Sweetie” will be inside Oracle Arena on Thursday night when her favorite NBA team hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.
Once the Warriors heard about their centenarian superfan, who will turn 106 on June 12, they decided to pull out all the stops for “Sweetie” (her name was withheld from an Inside Bay Area report out of respect for her privacy concerns), and have given her a seat in a suite so she can cheer on the squad.
“Well, they heard what I asked for,” she said.
Sweetie’s daughter reports that a team representative contacted her after a newspaper story chronicled how big of a fan her mother is — and has been for decades — and that Sweetie will receive VIP treatment at the game.
“She’s excited, and I get to be her press secretary,” Sweetie’s daughter said. “It’s all fun.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr even commented on the fact Sweetie will be in the arena for Game 1.
“What a great story … 105 years old, following the Warriors for all these years,” he said. “I loved her message: ‘Don’t get the swell head.’ That’s always our message to the guys, but Sweetie had a better way of putting it than I did. From what I gather, we’re going to have her at Game 1, which I’m really excited about.”
Sweetie clearly has a great knowledge of basketball and shared her thoughts on Golden State’s Western Conference Finals-clinching Game 5 win last week. She says even though she enjoyed the game, she was left a little irritated by the team’s play.
“Oh, I did like that last game,” Sweetie said. “I loved it, but it made me kind of angry because I wanted to slap them boys for playing so sloppy in the first half,” Sweetie said. “I enjoyed every bit of it.”
There’s a good chance she’ll be enjoying her VIP treatment at Game 1 on Thursday even more.
