Ted Cruz jokingly panders to New England audience: ‘Tom Brady was framed’
Texas Senator Ted Cruz made no bones about what he was up to — abject pandering — when he told a Massachusetts audience over the weekend that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was framed in the Deflategate scandal.
Not only that, the Republican presidential nomination hopeful claims that he knows who was behind said framing.
Great googly moogly.
“Let me start by saying: Tom Brady was framed,” Cruz told the presumably pro-Patriots audience. “Now I’m not willing to pander on much, but on that, Tom Brady was framed!”
Of course this was all a set-up to take a snarky pot-shot at Hillary Clinton, the presumed front-runner for the Democrats’ presidential nomination, and the email scandal still maligning her campaign stemming from her time serving as Secretary of State.
“And I will say this: I have it on good authority that Hillary Clinton did it. Why do you think she deleted her emails?” he asked.
Ah yes. Presidential politics — seasoned with a dash of humor, a smidgen of pandering and a sprinkle of sports — at its finest.
Given the rumors that Brady declined attending the White House’s celebration of the Patriots’ Super Bowl championship due to hurt feelings caused by a rip courtesy of the White House’s press secretary, perhaps even he found Cruz’s jab humorous, so long as his sense of humor is based upon political party lines.
Still, Cruz missed out on easy joke. If only he would have said his source on the Brady-framing news, while anonymous, went by the moniker “Deep Ball.” That would have been … well … stupid.
