LeBron James sidesteps question about Kevin Love’s future with Cavaliers
LeBron James indicated he has far more important things to worry about at the moment than contemplate Kevin Love’s future with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
After all, the Cavaliers are in the midst of a run at an NBA title, albeit one that suffered a heavy blow given Love is unlikely to return this postseason after suffering a dislocated shoulder during the team’s series-clinching win Sunday over the Boston Celtics. It’s indeed conceivable, then, that Love has played his final game as a Cavalier.
Still, James said on Tuesday that it makes little sense — for either himself or Love — to discuss whether the power forward, who can become a free agent by opting out of his contract at season’s end, will be back with the team next season.
“That’s a question that I can’t answer right now,” James said, per Rick Noland of The Chronicle-Telegram. “I think that’s the last thing on his mind right now. What’s on his mind is his shoulder and how disappointed he is, how hurt he is over the fact that he can’t play in this postseason.
“I don’t think he’s thought about the offseason or what he wants to do. I haven’t had that conversation with him and I shouldn’t have to have that conversation with him, especially right now when we’re going through this challenge and this battle of trying to win a championship.”
Some may take that as a discouraging commentary on Love’s uncertain future with the Cavaliers, especially in light of the several speed bumps James and Love have endured in forging a professional relationship. Incidents including James seemingly calling out Love on social media, Love speaking candidly about his relationship with James to how Love stated he would pick Russell Westbrook as MVP over his teammate have all marked Love’s brief and tumultuous tenure in Cleveland.
But it’s unreasonable to expect James to say anything about Love at this time. What benefit would it have? James is in postseason mode, after all, a time when tries to avoid all the “nonsense out there.” Any speculation regarding Love — especially at this time, falls well within that category, which is why James showed savvy by wisely avoiding the issue altogether.
