Portly ex-NFL QB Jared Lorenzen on Jameis Winston: ‘He’s not fat’
Much criticism, consternation and speculation has surfaced in recent months concerning the debate surrounding whether or not Jameis Winston is overweight. At least Winston can take solace in the knowledge that there’s one person standing firmly in his corner.
A former NFL quarterback who received heavy criticism during his professional football-playing days — as well as in his collegiate years — believes it’s hogwash to suggest that Winston is fat: Jared Lorenzen, a/k/a The Abominable Throwman, The Round Mound of Touchdown, The Hefty Lefty, and perhaps best of all, The Pillsbury Throwboy.
Lorenzen defended Winston and blew off any notion that the soon-to-be first-round pick in the NFL Draft is overweight by any stretch, even managing to sneak in a shot at another professional pigskin-tosser known for portliness in the process.
“He’s not JaMarcus Russell. He’s not fat by any means. He’s just a big dude,” Lorenzen told TMZ. “He’s got a great body to play quarterback. The little skinny guys don’t make it. They can’t take a hit.
“Look at RG3 … small guy. Now he can’t even run.”
Lorenzen insists that less attention should be paid to Winston’s weight and more to his potential.
“He’s only 21 and he doesn’t even have his grown man body yet,” Lorenzen said. “He’s gonna get bigger and faster.”
Lorenzen, after starring at quarterback with the Kentucky Wildcats, enjoyed stints with the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts before moving on and bouncing around at the semi-pro level for a handful of seasons, tipping the scales at 320 pounds near the end of his career.
The weight and relative fitness of Winston has been a much bandied about topic ever since a photograph surfaced of him training ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine that appeared to indicate the former Florida State quarterback was carrying a few extra pounds around his abdominal area. Winston countered the assertion he was fat by proclaiming at the combine, “A lot of people thought I was fat. But I’m proving everybody wrong. I look good and I know it.”
Winston’s denials aside, additional photos have since surfaced that indicate he is at least arguably a bit paunchy. Perhaps not overweight but not in tip-top shape, even just this week at his Pro Day.
But hey, at least Lorenzen has Winston’s back. And let’s be honest, that guy’s opinion should carry a lot of weight.
