Furniture store to refund purchases if Nationals, Orioles both make World Series

While the odds may seem slim, should the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles square off in the World Series this fall, a D.C. area’s furniture store’s promotion could make some customers very happy.

Marlo Furniture, which operates six locations in the Virginia/Maryland/D.C. area, announced its “Marlo’s Grand Slam” promotion, the details of which are as follows: Any and all purchases made at one of its locations from March 30 through Opening Day (April 6) will be refunded in full if the Nationals and Orioles play one another in the Fall Classic.

Marlo Furniture general manager David Biddison says the chain was inspired to run the promo after seeing how well other gambits of this nature generated a fair share of publicity and goodwill for other industry retailers throughout the country.

“When I heard about a couple of furniture retailers around the country doing the Super Bowl promotion a couple of years back, I thought what a great idea, not only to boost business, but to have some fun throughout the summertime,” Biddison said, via D.C. Sports Bog. “I thought if we could bring both communities together, it would be kind of neat.”

As noted, this isn’t the first time a furniture store has tied a free furniture giveaway to a potential outcome of a sporting event. Ashley Furniture HomeStore and Better Sleep Shops in Ohio and Kentucky gave away a reported $1.5 million in furniture after the Ohio State Buckeyes won the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Gallery Furniture in Texas refunded approximately $4 million to customers last fall after the Houston Astros won more than 63 games (70) during the 2014 regular season.

Generally speaking, promotions of this nature are covered by some kind of insurance policy taken out by the retailer. Biddison indicates that Marlo Furniture will take out a policy in an amount based on demand.

“It’s a fun promotion,” Biddison said. “No one’s going to retire off what happens in one week, but we’re hoping a lot of people get free furniture.”

The Nationals have been tabbed by many experts as one of the favorites to reach the World Series coming out of the National League. The Orioles, however, appear to face far greater odds of punching its ticket out of the AL. Stranger things have happened, and should it somehow play out in that manner, Marlo Furniture wisely deciding to take out an insurance policy will obviously pay off.
