Larry Fitzgerald: Trading for Adrian Peterson would be a ‘game-changer’
Rumors have surfaced in recent weeks that the Arizona Cardinals could be a potential trade partner with the Minnesota Vikings if the team cannot come to terms with Adrian Peterson. While later reports indicated that the Cardinals have balked at the notion of bringing in the running back at his current salary, Larry Fitzgerald said the notion of bringing in such a talented player would be a “game-changer” for the Cardinals.
“Obviously, he’s an MVP-caliber player,” Fitzgerald said Wednesday afternoon after playing in the Pro-Am of the LPGA Founders Cup, via the team’s website. “Everybody knows that. Any team he ends up with — or if he stays with the Vikings — is going to have a great back. If he was to come play here, it would obviously mean a tremendous amount for our ballclub.”
Fitzgerald, a former Vikings ball boy, came to Peterson’s defense last month, referring to the running back as his “brother” while lamenting all that Peterson has lost — endorsements, reputation, nearly an entire season in his career — as a result of his child abuse case.
“He’s lost millions of dollars, endorsements, all types of things,” Fitzgerald told the Pioneer Press. “How much more can a man take? He’s apologized. We all make mistakes in life.”
Vikings general manager Rick Spielman reportedly informed Peterson’s agent that the team has no interest in cutting the running back, meaning either Peterson will be in a Vikings uniform next season or he will be traded. The Vikings have put on a universal organizational front — and a dialogue has been ongoing between the parties — indicating it is the team’s hope that Peterson continues his career in Minnesota.
If the bitterness Peterson purportedly feels towards the Vikings related to his perception that the team didn’t do enough to support him through his legal issues, the running back ultimately will have to be dealt, no matter how much the Vikings would wish otherwise. It the endgame in this drawn-out saga is the Vikings trading Peterson, Fitzgerald fully supports anything the Cardinals can do to effectuate bringing in arguably the best running back in football.
