Robert Flores checkmates Nick Young in Iggy Azalea zinger-spawned feud

If Nick Young knows what’s good for him, he hopefully will determine he’s been bested by Robert Flores in their burgeoning feud over the musical talents of the Los Angeles Lakers star’s girlfriend, Iggy Azalea. Because the “SportsCenter” anchor absolutely destroyed Young during a radio interview on Monday with a one-liner for the ages.

It all started when Flores lowered the boom Azalea’s music career during a segment on ESPN’s flagship show, suggesting that the Australian-born rapper is “trying to kill hip hop.”

Young came back swinging with a series of hostile and vitriolic tweets in response. In since-deleted posts directed to Flores, Young suggested that that he’s “pretty sure we going to run into each other soon” and that the anchor’s job “is to talk about sports not what me and my chick got going on.”

But Young did leave the following two tweets up, which were not personally directed to Flores’ Twitter account.

Fair enough. But the tweets nevertheless opened up an avenue for Flores to respond in kind, which he did during an appearance Monday evening on ESPN Radio’s Sedano and Stink program, during which he more or less laughed off any notion that the supposed feud between himself and Young is nothing more than good fun with no real harm intended.

But then, after some miscellaneous banter about the so-called beef, he dropped a zinger of all zingers — and one containing a relatively accurate factoid to boot — that presumably will end the silly, harmless feud, if that is indeed what this all was:

“If you look at his numbers, there is a 70% chance that—if he takes a shot at me—he’s going to miss. I’m just looking at the numbers, so I’m good.”

Given that Young is shooting at about a 36% clip this season, there really is only one thing left to say:

Check and mate.
