Riley Cooper featured Eagle on team’s calendar for Black History Month (pic)

In an utterly awkward case of unfortunate irony, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper was the featured player on the team’s 2015 official team calendar for the month of February, which is of course Black History Month.

What makes the seemingly innocuous nature of a random player appearing on this particular page of the calendar page is how the Cooper found himself in the middle of an enormous and embarrassing controversy after he was caught on video spewing racial slurs at security personnel while attending a country music concert during the 2013 offseason. Cooper is spotted yelling, “”I will jump that fence and fight every (N-word) here, bro.”

Once word got out regarding the innocent calendar gaffe, the Eagles issued an official statement, which read (via TMZ):

“We do not oversee the production of the annual team calendar. We do not provide any input about the players who are featured or where those pictures appear in the calendar. The NFL licenses the production of that calendar to a third party and we do not have an opportunity to review the material.”

Obviously, this was in all likelihood nothing more than an honest and inadvertent mistake and there is no conspiracy theory nor devious intent behind Cooper’s landing Black History Month in the team calendar. Still, it merits asking: Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?

Riley immediately expressed remorse for his behavior once the video that showed his conduct at a Kenny Chesney concert went viral. The wide receiver issued a lengthy public apology before personally apologizing to teammates.

“It’s going to be very difficult for me. I’m going to tell them, ‘I’m extremely sorry,’ tell them exactly what I’m telling you guys. There was a confrontation and I handled it extremely, extremely poorly,” Cooper told reporters in July 2013, per “This is kind of the lowest of lows. This isn’t the type of person I want to be portrayed as. This isn’t the type of person that I am.”

Cooper was fined an undisclosed amount by the Eagles and briefly excused from team activities and took leave from the team. He was never punished by the NFL.
