Doug Baldwin reportedly fined $11,025 for scatological touchdown celebration

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin has been fined $11,025 by the NFL for his “obscene” celebration when he mimicked dropping his pants and defecating a football following a touchdown during the third quarter of Super Bowl XLIX, according to FOX Sports’ Mike Garafalo.

Baldwin’s scatological celebration cost the Seahawks a 15-yard penalty during the game. When asked about it after the game, the wide receiver stated only that the crass move was “between me and the guy it was directed at.”

Reports surfaced that speculated that the target of Baldwin’s celebration included Peter King as well as other sportswriters who have criticized the Seahawks wide receiver corps. King reported on a strange interaction with Baldwin during Super Bowl Week.

Last week, I was the pool reporter for the Pro Football Writers of America covering Seattle Seahawks practices. I was standing on the sidelines of practice Friday, inside the Arizona State University football practice bubble, when, after a play was run, Doug Baldwin strode over to me until he was right in front of me. He was not happy. He said angrily: “You’re into this mediocre receiver s—, right? I read your s—.”

What? Huh? I truly didn’t know what he was talking about.

Baldwin had anger in his eyes. “You’re one of them!” he said. “I read your s—.”

No matter who the celebration was intended for, Baldwin later defended it, saying he has no regrets for the vulgar display.

“No,” Baldwin said, via Herald.net. “I was just out there having fun playing the game of football. There’s no explanation. You play this game for so long, you go out there and you have fun. I can get criticized for it, that’s fine, everybody has their opinion, but in the moment I was just having fun. My teammates know that.”

Garafalo notes that the amount of Baldwin’s fine was the “minimum” amount. The wide receiver’s teammate, Marshawn Lynch, was fined $11,050 for a crotch grab he committed following a touchdown in a game against the Arizona Cardinals in December and subsequently was assessed a $20,000 fine for pulling the same groin-grab act during the team’s win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game.
