Rory McIlroy records first hole-in-one of professional career (video)
Rory McIlroy’s charmed life — both on and off the course — took another upswing courtesy of a nifty swing with his 9-iron on the par-3 15th hole, sinking a hole-in-one during the second round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
While it is believed the 25-year-old North Irishman’s first hole in hole-in-one came at the spry age of nine years old, his ace at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club was the first of his professional career.
McIlroy, playing with pal Rickie Fowler as well as Italian Matteo Manassero, was congratulated by his fellow players after the ball bounced twice and miraculously spun into the cup as the crowd erupted.
“As soon as it left the bat, it looked like it had a chance,” McIlroy said, via the Golf Channel. “First one ever in competition as a pro, so obviously beers are on me tonight.”
The one-and-done by the world’s number one golfer highlighted a second-round 66, putting him in sole possession of third place and pulling him within two strokes of tournament leader Martin Kaymer (-13) heading into the weekend.(photo credit: Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images)
