New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, along with his wife, Brittany, donated $200,000 to help aid victims still reeling from the havoc wreaked upon Long Island in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, a savage storm that devastated the entire eastern seaboard in 2012.

The donation was made on behalf of the Brees’ charitable organization, the Dream Foundation, was used to assist families in the Long Island region, the United Way of Long Island announced Thursday, per a Newsday report.

“Brees was inspired by the outpouring of generosity from Long Islanders after Hurricane Katrina flooded the city of New Orleans and was happy to return the kindness during Long Island’s time of need,” a statement from United Way of Long Island read.

The substantial donation helped 20 families rebuild their homes, including Madeline Benegas, who not only is raising her two children, but also cared for her parents as well as a brother left paralyzed by a traffic accident.

“None of this would be helpful without your help,” Benegas said in a statement.

“We needed a Saint and we are very grateful for the Saint from New Orleans who came to our aid,” said Long Island President and CEO Theresa Regnante.

Brees, even though he didn’t join the Saints until 2006, one year after Hurricane Katrina, obviously knows first-hand the long-lasting devastation and subsequent, years-long hardship a hurricane can have upon a community. The fact that he and his wife, through their foundation, expanded their geographical range of influence and scope of their giving certainly is beyond commendable.
