Chase Utley surprises Phillies fan battling cancer on ‘Ellen’ (video)
Julie Kramer, a 23-year-old from Tabernacle, N.J., currently is battling Stage 4 synovial sarcoma. Her courageous fight against the disease caught the eye of Ellen DeGeneres courtesy of her friends beginning a “#JulieMeetsEllen” campaign on social media.
Kramer was a guest on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Monday. Knowing that Kramer was a devoted Philadelphia Phillies fan, the talk show host had an extra special surprise in store for the young woman.
After presenting Kramer with a check for $10,000 to help pay for the considerable expenses related to treatment, DeGeneres brought up the Phillies.
“I am a huge Philadelphia Phillies fan,” Kramer said.
When asked by Ellen who her favorite player was, Kramer said, “Chase Utley. He’s the man.”
Then DeGeneres called upon someone waiting backstage.
“Hey, Chase, bring it out will you?” DeGeneres said, referring to Chase Utley strode as the Phillies star made his way onstage with an armload of team gear and memorabilia for Kramer.
“Shut up!” Kramer exlaimed as Utley strolled in, adding to Utley, “You rule.”
Utley offered Kramer the opportunity to attend as many Phillies games as she wants next season, even inviting her to attend batting practice sometime so she could meet some of the players.
