Urban Meyer’s wife sets hair on fire blowing out candles on birthday cake (photo)
Shelley Meyer, the wife of Ohio State Buckeyes head football coach Urban Meyer, was celebrating her 50th birthday on Thursday when a near disaster occurred during the customary blowing out of the candles on her cake.
Shelley leaned in a bit too close to the cake and one of the candles came into contact with her tresses of hair, setting it aflame.

Mrs. Urban Meyer displayed a good sense of humor about the potentially injurious incident, cracking jokes on Twitter and happily retweeting wisecracks from other folks on her page.
The Cleveland Plain-Dealer dug up a quote from Urban Meyer from his introductory press conference at Ohio State that is tangentially apropos to his wife’s scary and hairy situation.
“I want a bunch of coaches that coach like their hair’s on fire,” Meyer said at that 2011 presser. While he likely does not want his better half to take such a statement literally, it appears Shelley was game to demonstrate such to her hubby’s assistants. Follow Shelley’s lead — metaphorically — in the College Football Playoff, and Ohio State will fare well.
As far as Urban Meyer was concerned, showing that college football waits for no man — even one who has a spouse celebrating a milestone birthday — the Buckeyes head coach apparently was not present at this particular celebration, as he was attending the College Football Awards Show. If he had been, given his keen eye for details, chances are good he would have noticed his wife’s hair coming perilously close to an open flame.
Either that or he would have been quick with a fire extinguisher. Or a towel or something.
