Johnny Manziel’s name added to infamous Browns quarterback jersey (photo)

In a profound testament to the glaring instability the Cleveland Browns have endured at the quarterback position since 1999, a mannequin wearing a team jersey that sits in a window in Downtown Cleveland now boasts one more name: That of one Johnny Manziel, who becomes the 23rd QB to start for the Browns.

The jersey, obviously frequently updated, became something of a phenomenon last season when three quarterbacks made starts for the squad.

The mannequin features every player that has stepped in under center for the Browns since 1999, when the team selected Tim Couch with the first-overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. Other blasts from the inept quarterbacking past on the list include:

  • Tim Couch
  • Ty Detmer
  • Spergon Wynn
  • Doug Pederson
  • Kelly Holcomb
  • Luke McCown
  • Jeff Garcia
  • Trent Dilfer
  • Charlie Frye
  • Ken Dorsey
  • Bruce Gradkowski
  • Derek Anderson
  • Brady Quinn
  • Jake Delhomme
  • Seneca Wallace
  • Colt McCoy
  • Thad Lewis
  • Brandon Weeden
  • Brian Hoyer

There’s a whole lot of signal caller history right there, although not the kind of history Browns fans likely enjoy.

Johnny Football of course was named Cleveland’s starter for its Week 15 showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals, replacing an erratic and ineffective Brian Hoyer.

The playoff hopes of the 7-6 Browns now hinge on the performance of a raw, rookie quarterback making his first career start, a daunting proposition to be sure.

Even worse, should Manziel falter, that mannequin’s Couch jersey, with all the additions, will soon have names dragging on the floor.
