In a scene that had to be profoundly awkward for everyone present, much-maligned New York Jets general manager John Idzik was attending the team’s practice on Wednesday when an airplane flew overhead trailing a banner that called for his ouster.

ESPN New York reports that the plane circled overhead for approximately 20 minutes and made at least a dozen passes as players and coaches continued practicing and the beleaguered Idzik spoke with head coach Rex Ryan and owner Woody Johnson.

Forget awkward, that’s awk—–ward with a capital “——A—–.”

As noted previously, the disgruntled fans behind the website “firejohnidzik.com” announced that it had raised sufficient funds to pay for three billboards calling for Idzik’s dismissal to be displayed nearby MetLife Stadium in the coming weeks.

The contingent of unhappy fans running the site, however, denied responsibility for the airplane, although they expressed full support in the aerial demonstration.

Talk about things going from bad to worse. Sure, the Jets are 1-8 and Idzik has presided over two disastrous seasons since being hired on Jan. 18, 2013, but man, talk about piling on the poor guy. Only so much responsibility should be assigned to a general manager. The embattled head coach, arguably the owner, and most of all, the players, have to assume some part in what’s gone wrong with the team over the past several seasons.

Still, in keeping with the theme of looking into the sky for signs, good or bad — in this case really, really bad — when it rains, it pours, indeed.
