Russell Westbrook breaks hand, gets into verbal altercation with fan (videos)
An Oklahoma City Thunder roster already decimated by injuries got that much thinner after it was learned Thursday night that point guard Russell Westbrook fractured the second metacarpal in his right hand during the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, per a report from The Oklahoman. He is expected to miss anywhere between four and six weeks.
The injury occurred midway through the second quarter after he appeared to bang his hand on Kendrick Perkins’ elbow when going up for a rebound.
Westbrook immediately grabbed his hand and was later taken back to the locker room where he underwent X-rays.
Before Westbrook made it back to the Thunder locker room in Staples Center, though, the point guard got into a verbal altercation with a presumably heckling fan as he made his way down the tunnel.
A fan video posted to YouTube provides audio evidence of what prompted Westbrook to lose his temper, at one point having to be physically restrained by security staffers.
While it’s not easy to exactly ascertain exactly what the heckler said to cause Westbrook to blow up, it appears that someone was yelling “Stuff!” or some variation while another individual was shouting something about UCLA, where the point guard starred for two years.
Whether or not the “Stuff!” comment or whatever is what triggered Westbrook’s hostile response is unclear, but something obviously was said to evoke such an angry reaction from the Thunder star, who probably wasn’t in the best of moods to begin with given he was leaving a game due to injury.
This isn’t the first time Westbrook has mixed it up with a heckling fan. In December 2013, the point guard, along with Kevin Durant, got into it and started jawing with a couple of Atlanta Hawks fans during a road game.
Westbrook reportedly will be re-evaluated on Friday but given the nature of the injury, he’ll be out for a considerable amount of time. As noted above, the Thunder are already playing undermanned. As The Oklahoman notes, Westbrook now “joins Kevin Durant (broken foot), Reggie Jackson (ankle), Jeremy Lamb (back strain), Mitch McGary (broken foot), Anthony Morrow (sprained knee) and Grant Jerrett (ankle surgery) on the injury list.”
“It’s unfortunate the way it is right now, but that’s the way it is,” said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks. “We have to figure out how we can improve and get better from all of our experiences. And this is going to be a tough one, but the good teams, good players bounce back through adversity.”
