Dwyane Wade may be incredibly busy preparing for his first NBA season in years without LeBron James as a teammate, but he made sure to take some time out of his hectic schedule to ensure that the 90th birthday of a devoted Miami Heat fan a memorable one.
It all started when 89-year-old grandmother Illuminada Magtoto, “Grandma Nelly” as she is known, posted a video in which she made a very special request of the Heat superstar: Play some basketball with her on her 90th birthday. Actually, she essentially challenged Wade to some 1-on-1.
Wade caught wind of the “challenge” and replied to her on Twitter.
“@BrianLacsina: My Grandma challenges @DwyaneWade on a one-on-one for her 90th birthday.. https://t.co/CPMCgm6HJK“(let’s do it grandma)

Grandma Nelly’s big 9-0 arrived on Tuesday and Wade and the Heat made sure her birthday wish came true.
Magtoto made an appearance at Tuesday’s Heat practice and while there wasn’t any 1-on-1 match-up between NBA star and nonagenarian, she and Wade did spend some time playing around on the court, surely a wonderful experience for both Grandma Nelly and Wade, not to mention the Heat players.
Wade even delivered a zinger at the expense of one of his teammates, telling Magtoto, “You throw a better lob than Mario Chalmers.” BOOM! ROASTED!
Wade later posted some photos to Instagram to commemorate the day.
Wade wrote, “Today after shootard. .I had the chance to meet this lovely lady. You never know the impact you have on people and meeting her made me realize yet again that my life is bigger than basketball. She presented a challenge to play me one on one for her 90th bday. Thanks to her family, the Miami Heat and TeamWade for making this wish come true. #biggerpurpose #hertearsalmostmademetear #happybday”
Kudos to Wade and the Heat for making this sweet old lady’s day. And happy 90th birthday to Grandma Nelly.
