Former teammate recalls Tom Brady’s considerable beer-chugging talents

Tom Brady is known on the football field as a fierce competitor who recoils in disgust at failure, willing to do anything to help lead the New England Patriots to victory.

While a vocal contingent of nattering nabobs of negativity were beginning to read Tom Brady and his career last rites after a relatively sub-par start to the season, the 37-year-old veteran at least temporarily silenced his doubters with an impressive performance on Sunday in a 43-17 beat down of the Cincinnati Bengals in prime time.

Ross Tucker, who spent one year as Brady’s teammate on the Patriots, playing offensive lineman with the quarterback during the 2005 NFL season, penned an essay for Sports On Earth where recalls a tale involving the chugging of beers and how it illustrated Brady’s passionate affinity for winning … everything.

After discussing Brady’s impeccable commitment to the game of football courtesy of his intense preparation, his intensity in the huddle — in training camp, no less — and so on, Tucker relays a story about a beer-chugging contest where Brady demonstrated his intensely competitive side.

I probably only went out socially with Brady on two or three occasions, but even then his competitive spirit reared its head.

We went to a local barbecue place near the stadium in Foxboro after practice one time, and there were two different occasions where Brady’s eyes displayed his trademark fire.

The first was when some of the veteran offensive linemen started talking to the rookies about a chugging contest. No big deal for these guys and given that they were fresh out of college, you would think they’d be at the top of their game. I was surprised to see Brady take part. The rookies looked at the seemingly pretty boy quarterback and laughed. I think I snickered myself.

We all should’ve known better.

I still have never seen anybody chug a beer faster than Tom Brady. You should’ve seen the way he slammed down his cup — it was like he was spiking the ball after a TD. It was hilarious. It was awesome. It was textbook Brady.

Textbook Brady, indeed. One can only imagine Tom Brady slamming down the quickly-emptied cup of beer … and then getting shut down by his assembled teammates in an effort to snag a high-five from someone, anyone. Because, you know, that’s how it goes for poor Tommy Boy.

But who knew Brady was a champion beer-chugger? After all, he’s an admitted frozen margarita guy. Whatever the liquor of choice, Brady has made remarks about swilling copious amounts of booze in the past. Heading into a September showdown with the San Diego Chargers back in 2011, Brady implored Patriots fans to “start drinking early” in order to get properly “lubed up” for the game. So, there’s that.
