J.J. Watt explains why it meant so much to be able to buy his mom a new car (photo)
J.J. Watt played the role of good son recently by buying his mother, Connie, a brand new car for her birthday.
The sweet new ride was delivered to Camp Randall Stadium, the arena where Watt starred as a collegian with the Wisconsin Badgers, and presumably nearby where his parents still reside (Watt was raised in Pewaukee, Wisc., about 60 miles outside of Madison).
Of course, signing a six-year, $100 million contract extension including $51.8 million in guaranteed money certainly helps lighten the impact of such a purpose. But it is the heartwarming sentiments expressed by the Houston Texans all-world defensive end regarding his deep appreciation for all the sacrifices his mother — not to mention his dad — made for him when he was growing up that makes the gift especially touching.
“Growing up, on TV I saw all the commercials with cars with red bows on them at Christmas time,” Watt said on Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle. “I always thought to myself, ‘Who can do that? Who can just buy a whole car for somebody’s birthday or for Christmas and put a bow on it and drive it? Could you imagine if you could do that for somebody how awesome that would be?’
“My whole life my parents have made sacrifices for me. they’ve done everything. They’ve made it so my brothers have had opportunities for success. To be able to give back to her and to surprise her like that, and to see my brother got me a nice video of her when she first saw it, there’s really no better feeling in the world than that to be able to take care of your family, take care of those closest to you. There’s no better way to spend my money than that.”
Aw, something that probably brought tears to his sweet mother’s eyes. What a kid.
Watt is off to a monster season, registering 15 tackles, two sacks, not to mention an 80-yard pick-six in Houston’s 23-7 win over the Buffalo Bills in last week’s action. If he keeps it up, it will merit his name being included in NFL MVP discussion at season’s end. If he has a bonus in line, according to his contract terms, for wining such a prestigious award, there’s a good chance he might be buying his old man a brand new car soon enough.
Who are we kidding? Watt could buy his dad a fleet of autos today without any bonus. What gives, J.J.? Maybe he’s waiting for his pop’s birthday is all. That’s probably it.
