TBS MLB talking heads do promo inspired by ‘Boom Goes the Dynamite’ (video)

Brian Collins may be one of the biggest sports-related celebrities of the Viral Video Age. The former Ball State University sports anchor became an Internet legend when footage of his incredibly awkward, highly amusing and comically inept debut broadcast surfaced.

Collins apparently had no idea he would be filling in for the regular guy, who was out with an illness, and the results made that abundantly obvious.

And things have never been the same for the poor guy, in good ways as well as bad.

Of course, Collins’ herky-jerky, stumbling sports highlights commentary was crowned by him dropping a “Boom Goes the Dynamite!” into his sports report, something that has been parodied by “Family Guy,” had him featured on “Tosh.0,” among others, and essentially made him a certifiable, if reluctant, Internet sensation.

Here’s his classic video, which has been viewed nearly an incredible 9 million times on YouTube.

Never gets old, does it?

Demonstrating that even viral video memes can have long a shelf life if treated with cleverness and wit, TBS has rolled out a promotional commercial for its MLB postseason coverage that parodies the classic video.

Starring talking heads Ron Darling, Cal Ripken Jr., Gary Sheffield and Pedro Martinez, the spot is a loving, if not mocking, tribute to poor Brian Collins and that fateful night he took to the airwaves woefully under-prepared for his debut.

Gold, Jerry. Gold. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Okay, maybe not in this particular instance but chances are good that Collins will get a good chuckle out of the ode anyway.
