Falcons mascot lays out Buccaneers fan who ran onto field in staged bit (video)
Whoever was inside Freddie Falcon’s costume more than earned his (or her?) pay on Thursday night given the on-field heroics demonstrated by the Atlanta Falcons mascot during the savage 56-14 throttling the home team laid on the woeful Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As the football team was busy setting records all over the field during a game that was over almost as quickly as it started — the Falcons were up 21-0 and 35-0 at the end of the first and second quarters, respectively — Freddie Falcon had to do a little T.C.O.B. when a Bucs fan dressed in pirate garb stormed the field.
If only it had not been an obviously staged bit to pump up the fans.
As the fan gallivanted about the gridiron “eluding” security, Freddie was stalking his prey, watching and waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.
And pounce he did.
Watch as the mascot, with a full head of steam, comes out of nowhere, running up from the end zone area before jumping on and wrapping up the Buccaneers fan before bringing him violently to the turf with a brutal spinning throw down.
Seriously, the guy looked completely worked as security hauled him up to escort him off the field. But let’s be honest: The idiot had it coming …
… if only this was a real incident and not a completely staged sideshow put on by the Falcons. There’s simply no way security would allow the mascot to go back for another shot on the Bucs fan after they corralled him. Nor would the NFL post video on its official site documenting how a team mascot viciously assaulted a random fan, even if said fan had been trespassing on the field.
Still, it’s amusing theater, even if slightly hackneyed.
