Tom Brady refuses to comment on numerous controversies plaguing NFL

If anyone is waiting for Tom Brady to speak out on the seemingly countless controversies and scandals currently afflicting the NFL, don’t bother. The New England Patriots quarterback prefers to remain silent.

Brady was asked to comment on the current crop of bad press rightfully plaguing the National Football League’s increasingly sullied name — Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy and so on — during his weekly radio appearance on WEEI. And he made it perfectly clear that there would be no comment.

“I try to stay in my lane. All of those things, none of it’s really my business or my control,” Brady said, via the Providence Journal. “I’ve just been focusing on the games and what I can do better. The things that are taking place on other teams or league-wide decisions, those are a different pay grade than me.”

Brady stated that while he does have thoughts on the issue, it’s not his place, nor his responsibility, to be a spokesman on behalf of the league.

“I certainly have a lot of personal feelings toward all those things, but it’s just, there’s nothing I can do. If I make a comment about it, there’s nothing I can do to make a difference,” he said. “The owners of the league, the commissioner of the league, the teams themselves, the players that are involved, they’re the ones that are speaking on it. It’s not really my responsibility to speak out about those things, because there are a lot of other people doing the talking.”

As far as Brady is concerned — at least according to his firm stance in not talking about it — he would prefer to not become part of the discussion.

“I really don’t want to be involved in any of those things,” Brady said. “I try to live and make the best decisions possible on and off the field and represent our organization and represent my family as best I can. Those things are happening. I just don’t want my name mentioned in any of those situations that are happening.”

Many will be unhappy with Brady’s unwillingness to involve himself with the horrible situation that the NFL finds itself in. As one of the league’s biggest and most recognizable stars, some will argue that Brady has an obligation to speak on behalf of those without a voice or the platform that is afforded him.

On the other hand, a person cannot be made to take a stand, voice his or her opinion or even comment on something they do not wish to discuss. Michael Jordan was frequently criticized for not being more socially active, but if a person’s heart isn’t in it, it makes little sense to expect them to be a figurehead, a critic, an agent for change or a spokesperson, no matter how disappointing some people may find that stance.

The NFL is at a pretty critical crossroads right now, but that does not mean that Tom Brady has to be involved with righting the wrongs he had no part of committing, even if people wished he would do so.
