Terrell Suggs dons gladiator helmet for pregame intro to fire up team, fans (pic/vid)
Baltimore Ravens fiery linebacker Terrell Suggs was trying to figure out a way to make a grand entrance heading into the team’s showdown with division rival Pittsburgh Steelers on “Thursday Night Football.”
And a grand entrance he made. Suggs emerged from the M&T Bank Stadium tunnel sporting an unconventional lid atop his skull: A silver gladiator helmet.
“I just thought that we needed a boost,” Suggs said, according to For the Win. “I couldn’t afford to start slow. I just wanted to get the crowd and my team in there early.”
Haloti Ngata apparently was the one who pressed Suggs do don the helmet.
“He was like, ‘Yeah, you should do it. It would be tight,’ ’’ Suggs said.
And “tight” it was, literally and figuratively.
The Ravens went out and put a whooping on the Steelers, winning going away by a score of 26-6. While Suggs was relatively quiet during the game, registering only three assists on tackles, it appears the pregame gladiator gear gambit paid off.
“I think so,” Suggs agreed. “We came out pretty fired up.”
No word if Suggs uttered, “At my signal, unleash hell” at any time. Although it wouldn’t have been perfectly fitting, as Maximus wasn’t yet a gladiator when he said those words in “Gladiator.”
It still would have been pretty cool, though. And yet, given that Suggs trolled Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin with a t-shirt this week that featured a “Game of Thrones” reference, this headgear arguably would have been more apropos.
Ah yes, “The Hound’s Helm” atop the large head of Sandor Clegane. Now that would have been awesome. The best part? Suggs — and anyone else, for that matter, can actually purchase a wearable version of the killer headgear. The price? $300. But man, would it be worth it.
