Martina Hingis says ‘Someone’s smoking some heavy s**t’ at U.S. Open (video)
Martina Hingis may have retired from the women’s singles circuit in 2007, but she still can be spotted from time to time at events competing on the doubles side.
That’s where Hingis could be found on Monday, playing with partner Flavia Pennetta against Jarmila Gajdosova and Ajla Tomljanovic at the U.S. Open.
During the duo’s 6-1 6-4 win by which they reached the quarterfinals, Hingis apparently noticed an unmistakeably pungent aroma wafting onto the court from the stands.
As the 33-year-old former Swiss superstar and Pennetta made their way to the players’ seats on the side of the court before a side change, Hingis was picked up on on a court-level microphone informing the chair umpire that “Someon’s smoking some heavy s**t,” clearly indicating that she believed that someone taking in the match in the stands perhaps was puffing away on some pot.
Given her allegedly shady past related to the possible personal use of drugs, it’s likely that Hingis would be able to recognize the distinctly singular smell of marijuana. Hingis was suspended for two years by an ITF tribunal in January 2008 after a relatively minute amount of benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, was found in a urine sample she had previously provided.
Either way, how about some fan smoking up at the U.S. Open. Talk about “one toke over the (base)line,” right?
