On Sunday, Aug. 17, the WWE will take over Staples Center in Los Angeles for the 27th annual “SummerSlam.” And like its predecessors, all indications point to “SummerSlam 2014” being a memorable night of wrestling entertainment, loaded with intrigue and anticipation that, once the dust settles, will have fans talking about it for the weeks and months ahead.
Of course, the most heavily anticipated match on Sunday has to be the WWE World Heavyweight title showdown between John Cena and Brock Lesnar, two titanic legends of WWE.
After defeating Randy Orton, Kane, and Roman Reigns at “Battleground,” Cena retained the title after winning the belt in a ladder match at “Money in the Bank” to become a 14-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Lesnar made his triumphant return to the WWE the following night on “Raw” where he was picked by WWE CEO Triple H to be Cena’s opponent at “SummerSlam,” setting up a showdown of truly epic proportions that will in all likelihood will turn out to be a match for the ages.
And it doesn’t stop there with fantastic matches. Stephanie McMahon will face Brie Bella in a match where bad blood is the name of the game, as McMahon and Bella have been involved in an embittered feud that ultimately led to her quitting the WWE. The animosity between the two have involved both slapping the other in the face while Brie’s sister Nikki was being used a roadkill by McMahon in matches that ended with Nikki being beaten down again and again.
With her sister taking the brunt of McMahon’s fury, Brie agreed to return to the WWE if and only if McMahon agreed to a match at “SummerSlam.” Stage set.
Other matches on the card that round out what will be a memorable night of wrestling include a Roman Reigns-Randy Orton showdown, a grudge match between Chris Jericho and Bray Wyatt, a lumberjack match pitting Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, a Divas title bout between AJ Lee and Paige and the intercontinental tile is on the line with The Miz attempting to retain the belt in a match against Dolph Ziggler.
But “SummerSlam” is more than the night itself and the slew of great matches on the card. The evening of ring battles obviously serve as the main event, but the WWE has scheduled several events around “SummerSlam,” including several panels, including appearances by Hulk Hogan and Stone Cold Steve Austin, that transforms the of spectacle into a days-long celebration of wrestling.
Not only that, the WWE has scheduled several community outreach events leading up to the big show on Sunday.
