Mark Cuban: I was naked hitting refresh on my computer when I became a billionaire
As we all know abundantly well courtesy of his self-assured demeanor and larger-than-life persona, Mark Cuban is crazy rich and isn’t afraid to flaunt it. The flamboyant Dallas Mavericks owner arguably has every right to showcase the enormous wealth he has accumulated due to his extremely savvy business acumen, even if his bravado and ego can come across off-putting at times.
Be that as it may, Cuban is extremely successful and unafraid to show it, but it is nevertheless interesting to get a peek behind the curtain, so to speak, and get an inside look at how the man himself reacted when he hit significant financial milestones as he built his vast empire … even if what one might see behind said curtain could prove to be a troubling dose of nightmare fuel.
During a recent podcast with James Altucher, Cuban was asked what was better: Making his first million or hitting the one-billion-dollar mark?
Not surprisingly, Cuban admits cracking the billion-dollar threshold was far sweeter.
“The billion by far,” he revealed with a chuckle.
Cuban still wanted to stress that hitting the one-million mark wasn’t half-bad, either.
“The million was fun, because it was a drinking million, it was, ‘On my god, I’m going to love this, my life has changed, but I got to keep on working because I haven’t hit my goals yet, and there’s so much more I want to do,” he said.
As noted above, it isn’t a shock that Cuban enjoyed becoming a billionaire far more than becoming a millionaire, but what is slightly shocking is exactly what Cuban was doing — and what state of dress he was in — when he learned he had entered the Billionaire Boys Club.
He was butt naked. At his computer. Hitting refresh.
“The billion was, ‘I can’t f—ing believe it.’ Literally, I was sitting in front of a computer, naked, hitting the refresh because we were close — waiting until my net worth hit that billion when the stock price got to a certain point, and then I kinda screamed and jumped around and then got dressed.”
Now that’s a picture worth a billion words, in a manner of speaking. Although it’s a picture one may be willing to pay a vast sum to permanently erase from one’s memory.
The podcast is available here, albeit on auto-play. Cuban’s comments above come at approximately the 42-minute mark.
