Icky Grump Redux: Jack White throws out first pitch before Tigers game (video/pics)

There are few things more American than baseball, apple pie and … a sad Jack White looking like he lost his last friend (at times) at a major league ballpark.

For the second time in about a week, the rocker made an appearance at a ballgame — he took in a Chicago Cubs game with is daughter last week at Wrigley Field — only this time, he took center stage as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Tuesday before the Detroit Tigers hosted the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

White was back in his hometown of Detroit for a pair of shows this week celebrating the June release of his latest solo album, Lazaretto, and it made perfect sense for the native son to take part in the pregame ritual.

To give the festivities an even more surrealistic vibe, White’s appearance coincided with a “Christmas in July” event being held by the Tigers, which meant that the rocker threw his first pitch out to none other than Old Saint Nick, Santa Claus, Kris Kringle, what have you.

Not a bad pitch. Not a bad pitch at all. Sure, it was looped in there, but in the pantheon of celebrity ceremonial first pitches, White’s effort was well-above-average.

Oh, and here’s White taking part in a selfie with Santa and Tigers mascot PAWS.

A lot of fun was had making light of how miserable White looked at the Cubs game courtesy of some well-timed image grabs, but in actuality, White appeared to be somewhat enjoying himself at Wrigley last week.

With him being back in his old stomping grounds, White appeared much more at ease, letting loose a bit and even cracking a smile or two.

That does not mean, however, that a few of those aforementioned well-timed image grabs don’t showcase White looking completely miserable on Tuesday night.

Misery, or steely-eyed focus? You make the call.

Ha. Awesome.
