Kalamazoo Growlers unveil ‘Selfie Jerseys’ for team’s ‘Salute to Selfie Night’ (photos)

On Thursday night at Homer Stryker Field, the Kalamazoo Growlers, the Michigan-based member of the Northwoods League, a collegiate summer baseball league, will don its much ballyhooed “Selfie Jerseys” in a game against the Wisconsin Woodchucks.

The Growlers received a fair share well-deserved publicity for the cleverly conceived promotional stunt when it was announced earlier this spring. The bit entailed recruiting fans to post selfies of the themselves and bring them to the attention of the team.

From the submitted entries the team received before April 1 via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the team would “build a unique mosaic-style jersey assembled entirely from the selfies entered in the promotion.” An added bonus would go to the fan who exhibited the most “Growlers spirit” as his or her selfie would receive a featured and prominent location on all jerseys.”

All the preparation, all the selfies and all the hype will come to a celebrated conclusion on Thursday with the team’s “Salute to Selfie Night.” And if there was anything that required a night of saluting at the ballpark, it’s the selfie. Because, you know, all the kids are doing it and stuff.

The jerseys will be auctioned off and a grand time will be had by one and all at an event that presumably involve a lot of people taking selfies with even more frequency than usual. And that’s saying something, as the oft-self-absorbed population of obsessive selfie-takers usually takes the entire selfie game way too far in the first place. But that’s another story for another time.

All that aside, how cool would it be to take a selfie of oneself while wearing a jersey featuring a whole bunch of selfies that includes your very own selfie? Now, that would be pretty crazy, right? Not so crazy that it would inspire a person such as myself to post said selfie to social media, but pretty swell nevertheless.
