Lolo Jones goes from elated to deflated as USMNT blows win over Portugal (pic/vid)

There have been some devastating moments in USMNT history at the World Cup, but other than an elimination loss, none have been as heart-wrenching as how the squad blew a one-goal lead in the waning moments of stoppage time and had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Portugal in a thrilling but ultimately disappointing and emotionally deflating Group G match.

Anyone who tuned in to watch the U.S. Men’s National Team’s showdown with Portugal on Sunday experience an unbelievable range of emotions throughout the match but were dealt an initial devastating blow early on when Nani scored from in close following a brutal turnover by defender Geoff Cameron in the box.

Stress, disappointment and worry proved to be the prevailing emotions throughout the duration of the first half, as the U.S. challenged but could not net the equalizer yet managed to keep the score 1-0.

But the dedication and patience of the American backers was rewarded when Jermaine Jones scored from way out on a beautiful strike to tie the game at one goal apiece and those fans were propelled into rapturous joy after Clint Dempsey gave the United States a 2-1 lead when the striker somehow put the ball in the goal off his stomach during a furious effort by the squad in the box.

All that was left to do was hold on for dear life and allow time to run off the clock … which the U.S. did … but with five minutes of extra time added, it proved to be too much time as a perfect cross by Cristiano Ronaldo was headed in by Silvestre Varela as stoppage time was oh so close to running out.

Despite the team’s valiant efforts to punch its ticket to the Round of 16, the USMNT’s chances of advancing are now dependent on a good showing against Germany, although other factors such as goal differential could come into play as well, meaning the tie doesn’t necessarily mean doom and gloom for the Americans.

But to be within seconds of securing advancement certainly stung for U.S. fans cheering on the squad all over the globe, from those sitting devastated in their seats at the rainforest arena in Manaus to those huddled around televisions in bars and living rooms back in the States. It felt like one vicious kick to the gut.

Lolo Jones, and ardent USMNT supporter whose patriotic leanings have been highlighted by being of both the winter and summer U.S. Olympic teams, perfectly summarized the joyous highs and shocking and sudden lows that epitomized the emotional roller coaster U.S. fans went through in a matter of minutes as Portugal tied the score so late.

Yep, that about says it all. What a heartbreaking tie. So close, yet so far.
