Rickie Fowler wears knickers to honor memory of Payne Stewart (video/photos)
Referring to Payne Stewart as one of his idols, Rickie Fowler, already usually a pretty snappy dresser, used his first round outfit at the 2014 U.S. Open to pay tribute to late, great champion.

Fowler eschewed his standard flashy attire and instead sported a pair of knickers, a trademark component of Stewart’s tournament wardrobe, who of course was wearing when he won the 1999 U.S. Open, when the U.S. golf’s national championship also was held at Pinehurst No. 2.
“I’ve really been looking forward to wearing this outfit,” Fowler told the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis. “It’s been hard to keep a secret. Payne Stewart was on of my idols.”
A fitting tribute, indeed. Stewart of course tragically died only four months after his monumental victory, perishing due to the depressurization of the cabin in his Learjet on Oct. 25, 1999.
The memory of Stewart has loomed over the weeks leading up to the U.S. Open and even his daughter Chelsea took a moment earlier this week to pose alongside his statue on the grounds to mimic the now-legendary celebratory pose Stewart struck upon his victory.
