Former Tar Heels basketball player played a giant on ‘Game of Thrones’ (pic)
Neil Fingleton has gone on from an injury-plagued college basketball career with the North Carolina Tar Heels and Holy Cross Crusaders to become something of a bit player in the acting world.
Fingleton graduated from Holy Cross in 2004 after transferring to the school in 2002 before embarking on a professional basketball career that saw him playing in the ABA as well as the pro leagues in Spain and England.
Here’s what Fingleton looked like as a player:
The 33-year-old native of England is using his remarkable height — 7-foot-6 — to land roles in films such as “X-Men: First Class” and “47 Ronin.”
But perhaps his biggest role to date — literally and figuratively — was his appearance as one of the giants from beyond the Wall in last Sunday’s “Game of Thrones” episode, “The Watchers on the Wall.”
Pretty awesome. Both the episode itself — no spoilers here, I promise — and the fact that the giant was portrayed by a former basketball player. A pretty good gig if you can get it. Just don’t try telling a giant anything about that in the Common Tongue. They speak the Old Tongue of the First Men. Duh.
