Billy Butler grounds out to Jose Bautista … in right field (video)

Granted, Kansas City Royals first baseman-designated hitter Billy Butler goes 240 pounds and isn’t known as the fleetest of foot, but it’s still practically inexcusable that he was retired on a ground ball hit to right field.

Butler did hit a laser to right field and granted — again — Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista did come up firing and unleashed an absolute cannon after fielding the ball on one hop, but still … grounding out to right field?

It’s certainly not the first time it has happened — nor will it be the last — but how many times, no matter how long a person practices the timeless, Zen-like act of baseball scorekeeping, will they be able to write in “9-3” on their scorecard?

The play occurred in the top of the 9th inning, with the Royals on the short side of the scoreboard, 6-5.

In the end, the play didn’t have a huge impact on the outcome of the game for K.C.. The Royals scored the tying run later in the inning and ultimately beat the Blue Jays by the score of 8-6 in 10 innings.
