Tara the Hero Cat ‘throws’ out first pitch at minor league baseball game (video)
The Bakersfield Blaze had arguably one of the most peculiar first pitch ceremonies before its game on Tuesday, as Tara, known worldwide as the Hero Cat “threw” out the first pitch. The Blaze, a minor league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, were hosting the Lancaster JetHawks, an affiliate of the Houston Astros.
The ceremonial first pitch, announced a few weeks ago, did not go off without a hitch. With some fishing line attached to the baseball — seen above in the photo — that ultimately proved to be an ineffective gambit, Tara, who garnered international attention after chasing off a dog who was attacking her owner’s 4-year-old son, tossed the ball toward home plate with the assistance of her owner, Roger Triantafilo.
As noted above, the fishing line trick did not pay off, but improvisation was needed by Triantafilo after the line got snagged on something. A brief delay ensued, but by hook or by crook Tara’s owner helped the feline “throw” the ball towards home plate.
Sure, in essence the cat did little but get cradled on the field and look confused as her owner more or less chucked the ball, but hey, what the hell, right? It’s a freaking cat.
