Rory McIlroy calls off engagement to Caroline Wozniacki, says ‘I wasn’t ready’
In a somewhat shocking turn of events seemingly out of nowhere, Rory McIlroy has officially called off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, mere days after the betrothed sent out invitations to their wedding.
McIlroy, speaking from Wentworth where is set to compete at the BMW PGA Championship starting Thursday, expressed regret and played the “It’s Not Her, It’s Me” card, indicating that the mailing of the wedding invitations ultimately gave him an epic case of cold feet.
“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said, via BBC Sport. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
Not only is the wedding off, McIlroy has put the kibosh on the relationship entirely.
A statement issued by his PR firm stated that McIlroy was announcing the split after speaking with Wozniacki first.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” the statement read. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had.”
The long-term relationship seemed destined for years of happiness and bliss after McIlroy announced the couple’s engagement on New Year’s Eve.

But it was not to be. Even though things were looking good for the couple, cleverly referred to as Wozzilroy, on New Year’s, their relationship wasn’t without its rough patches.
In October 2013, Wozniacki posted an unflattering photo of McIlroy sleeping, something that prompted rumors that the golfer was so upset he dumped her, something he refused to address one month later.
Despite some ups and downs, the two were often spotted goofing off with each other and supporting one another at their beloved’s events, with Wozniacki serving as caddie during Par-3 tournaments at the Masters and McIlroy often seen in the stands cheering on his Danish tennis star girlfriend.
But in the end, for whatever the reason, the relationship has been deemed kaput by Rory. Perhaps things were going too fast for the 25-year-old golfing phenom and the 23-year-old tennis champ whose career hasn’t been what it was before making a go of it with McIlroy.
But hey, it was a helluva run, a relationship the two will likely treasure once the inevitable pain of a bad breakup loses its intensity. And it’s still better than Rory leaving Caroline at the altar, right? Although, let’s be honest, waiting until after the wedding invitations were sent? That’s a pretty late in the game, man. McIlroy clearly had some modicum of trepidation about going through with the nuptials beforehand, perhaps he should have spoken up sooner.
But with matters of the heart, it makes no sense trying to get into another person’s head and attempt to ascertain why they do what they do.
