Torii Hunter has face tapped by ump after threatening to whoop Bud Norris’ ass (GIFs)
Things got a little frisky during the Detroit Tigers-Baltimore Orioles game on Monday after Bud Norris hit Torii Hunter in the ribs with a pitch.
During the eighth inning, Norris appeared to throw at Hunter. What made Hunter particularly upset about the incident is that Norris had just surrendered a two-run homer to Ian Kinsler, which Hunter interpreted to mean that Norris’ frustration precipitated the presumed intentional plunking.
Norris was ultimately ejected for drilling Hunter, but not before things got a bit tense.
As Hunter made his way to first base, the two ballplayers began jawing. An expert lip reader could arrive at the conclusion that Hunter said something along the lines about Norris related to how he could, would or may relish the opportunity to “whoop his ass.”
Before some semblance of order was restored, things between Hunter and Norris got more heated and the benches began to clear as umps and players alike attempted to intervene, umpire Paul Nauert made contact with Hunter’s face with his hand in more of a friendly tapping as opposed to some kind of hostile act of aggression, which is how Hunter characterized the contact following the game.
“That’s my guy,” Hunter said of Nauert. “He was trying to cover my mouth. I’ve known him too long (to be upset). He was just saying to me, ‘C’mon, T. You’re way better than that.’ And he’s right.
“I apologize to the fans for my reaction.”
A source told The Detroit News that the MLB intends to investigate the incident, as had it been Hunter who initiated contact with Nauert, he would most certainly been suspended. But since it was the other way around, it is unclear what action the league will take.
