Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin is about as red-hot as a hockey player can be right now. On Tuesday night, Ovechkin netted four goals — all of them coming at critical junctures of the game — leading the Caps to a 6-5 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Ovie scored his first goal of the night with the Caps down 3-0 in the first period and his fourth goal came with Washington’s net empty with the team down 5-4 with a shade over thirty seconds remaining in the third period. And while Ovechkin did miss on his shootout attempt after a scoreless overtime session, the Capitals nevertheless edged the Lightning in the glorified skills demonstration that now decides game by a margin of 3-2 for the 6-5 victory.

The prolific offensive output was Ovechkin’s 13th hat trick of his career and the third four-goal game of his magnificent NHL career. Ovie now leads the NHL with 26 goals on the season, five clear of the runner-up, Alexander Steen of the St. Louis Blues.

The guy loves playing the game, there is no doubt about that.

Discussing after the game how the Capitals always seem to be digging themselves a hole early on in games, Ovechkin said the team knows how to handle it (via

“We’ve been in this situation before,” Ovechkin said, referring to the Capitals’ propensity for slow starts. “I’m sure everybody knows we have lots of time left and we just have to take one at a time. The second goal by [Nicklas Backstrom] was huge, and we just felt we can come back and win the game.”

Without Ovechkin’s scoring prowess, though, the chance to win this game after going down 3-0 would have been slim to none.
