Jerry Kill, Gophers create ‘Get Out of ____ Free’ cards for home opener (pics)
As a resident of the fine State of Minnesota, I have witnessed firsthand the difficult task presented to third-year Minnesota Golden Gophers head football coach Jerry Kill of rebuilding a program that hasn’t been very good in a long time but was only made worse during the debacle of a tenure of previous coach Tim Brewster.
Brewster’s reign of awfulness only exacerbated how hard it is for the Gophers to compete with the likes of Ohio State, Michigan and the other powerhouses in the Big Ten.
But Kill has enjoyed success at every stop during his head coaching career — albeit at much smaller schools — and while the first two seasons were spent picking up the shattered pieces of a decimated program, perhaps Kill once again can work his magic.
Kill believes that one way to improve the program from the outside is for it to be fully supported by not only the school and student body but by all fans, and that begins with packing the TCF Bank Stadium on game days.
With that in mind, a “Get Out of ______ Free” card has been uploaded to the Gophers Facebook page, excusing the bearer out of any previous commitment — be it work, social outing, whatever — currently scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Aug. 29, the same time the Gophers host UNLV in its season opener.
Said Kill: “We hope to get a ton of support out at TCF Bank Stadium. We’ve got a bunch of new students on campus right now and old ones trickling in. There’s no question we want as much support as we can get.”
Perhaps these notes will help. Or not. Via Facebook:
Definitely creative. Whether or not the notes helps pack TCF Bank Stadium on Thursday remains to be seen, but Kill and the Gophers cannot be blamed for having some fun with their efforts.
