Scary stuff: Braves oufielder Jason Heyward hit in the face with 90 mph fastball (GIF)

During Wednesday’s afternoon ballgame between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, Braves outfielder Jason Heyward was hit on the right side of his face after a 90 mph fastball from Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese sailed high and tight on the left-handed hitter.

While it’s difficult to judge exactly where the ball struck Heyward and with the game still going on at the time of this post, the Braves have yet to provide any information regarding his condition, it appears that it’s possible the ball hit the right earflap of his helmet first, which would make a huge difference in the ultimate severity of the injury.

Heyward stayed on the ground for a few minutes before being helped off the field by a team trainer. A tweet from ESPN indicates that Heyward from “spitting up blood” the frightening incident. Either way, to see it happen is indeed disturbing:

Goodness gracious. The manner in which he slowly tumbles to the ground is hard to watch.

Let’s hope for the best for Jason Heyward, that the injuries aren’t too severe and that he’ll be back on the field in no time  at all.
