Yamma hamma. New York Mets reliever LaTroy Hawkins has done an admirable job in the closer role for the team, subbing in for injured regular Bobby Parnell. But Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers was an excruciating experience on many, many fronts. Mostly on the crotchal region front.

Coming in in the ninth inning with the Mets holding a two-run lead. He allowed a single to Mark Ellis and then Dodgers utility player Jerry Hairston hit a comebacker up the middle that bounced once and then … drilled Hawkins right in the gonads. Hard.

Hawkins somehow summoned all the testicular fortitude available to pick up the ball that hit him in the balls and retire Hairston with a throw over to first, but it was clear he was in agony.

Even more shockingly, Hawkins stayed in the game, despite the fact that it was later reported that Hawkins was not wearing a cup.

That’s when Andre Ethier teed off on a Hawkins offering for a two-run, game-tying homer. And that was that for Hawkins.

Ouch. Actually, double-ouch. No, make that ouch to the 100th power.

Hawkins discussed his dreadfully painful experience following the game, offering up some fantastic, yet squirm-inducing quotes: ”It was a direct hit — no cup,” said Hawkins. “When I lifted my leg, I could feel my [nuts] in my throat, but I thought I could get through it. I feel like I got kicked by a mule, and it hurts.”

Yamma hamma. That ain’t right, man. Not right.

Said teammate Marlon Byrd, after the Mets went on to lose in the 12 innings by a score of 5-4. “To lose this way hurts.” Ha. Try being LaTroy Hawkins, Mr. Byrd, as two hours later, Hawkins was still in pain and had to be carted to the bus.

Hawkins then offered up the following tweet:

He ain’t kidding, man. A long bus ride, indeed. At least Hawkins’ sense of humor wasn’t damaged.
