As expected, it turns out Derek Jeter and Hannah Davis are not engaged

The gossip rags, sports blogs and women who felt they actually have a chance at landing the New York Yankees captain were all whipped up into a frenzy early on Thursday when a photos of Derek Jeter and semi-longtime gal pal Hannah Davis published in the New York Daily News showed the gorgeous supermodel sporting what appeared to be a pretty flashy piece of jewelry on her left ring finger.

The photos, snapped Wednesday outside a Manhattan Starbucks, whipped everyone up into a tizzy as speculation ran rampant — including here at the Sportress — that the ring on the marrying finger indicated that the couple may be engaged.

It turns out … yeah, not so much.

A source — for whom, exactly, is not mentioned — tells E! News exclusively that no, the two are not engaged.

“Hannah is not engaged,” the source tells E! News. “It’s just a ring that she really likes.”

This development comes despite what a Diamond District jewelry expert told the Daily News’ “Confidenti@l” in the report that originally ignited the engagement suspicion firestorm, who said it was an engagement ring. But even if it was technically an engagement ring, that does not mean that it signifies an engagement. The idea that either an engagement ring or that a woman would wear a ring on her left ring finger means she is engaged is an antiquated concept from a bygone era.

Anyhoo, to put the final nail in the so-called rumored engagement coffin, Davis was photographed a few weeks ago wearing the exact ring at an after-party following the New York premiere of “Lovelace.”

So there you go. Jeter clearly is not engaged. Unless this so-called source for E! News isn’t telling the truth. As far as the photo from the movie after-party is concerned, maybe the couple have been engaged longer than anyone knew.

Huh. What tangled webs we weave. I don’t even know what to believe anymore. I suppose I’ll just have to wait for my wedding invitation to know for sure. Or not.
