Blatant Homerism

Justin Morneau pulls off amazing slide at home in Twins’ win over Angels (GIF)

A phenomenal slide by Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau during the top of the 8th inning gave the Twinkies a 3-2 lead over the host Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Tuesday night.

Morneau takes a wide route around Angels catcher Hank Conger to elude the tag. And while cutting such a wide path around Conger caused Morneau to miss home plate on the first pass, he quickly reached back and touched the plate before Conger could apply the tag.

Amazingly agile play, especially for a man of Morneau’s imposing size and stature. I just hope some of his teammates high-fived him when he got back to the dugout this time and he didn’t have to create imaginary friends like that one time.

Granted, the Angels came back to tie it in the 9th inning, but a grand slam by Chris Herrmann — filling in for Joe Mauer at catcher as the superstar had left the team earlier in the day after his wife entered the early stages of labor — pretty much put the game out of reach after Ryan Doumit scored the go-ahead run as the Twins defeated the Angels by a score of 10-3.
