Manny Ramirez hits first home run since return to American baseball (video)
Trying to make a comeback at the age of 41, Manny Ramirez signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers organization on July 3 after a semi-successful stint playing overseas in the Chinese Professional Baseball League for Taiwan’s EDA Rhinos.
While Manny continued to be Manny in China with his usual offbeat and amusing behavior — much to the delight of Taiwanese broadcasters — he played well enough for the Rangers to take a flier on him and the team assigned Ramirez to play for its Triple-A affiliate, the Round Rock Express. And if Manny keeps playing how he did on Tuesday, the gamble by the Rangers just might pay off.
Ramirez went 2-4 with a home run and three RBI, waking whispers of what he once was when he was one of the most feared hitters in all of baseball.
Of course, a legitimate comeback requires much more than one good night, so it’s likely the Rangers will exercise tremendous patience with the aging slugger and exhibit extreme caution before calling him up to the bigs, but hey, who knows?
And how about the new, freshly shaven look for Manny, sans dreadlocks? Looking good as a chrome dome, Manny. Looking good.
