Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero apparently licks his bats (video)
In yet another example showcasing that baseball players are among the strangest athletes out there when it comes to bizarre habits, strange rituals and unhinged superstitions, Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero was caught on video licking a couple of bats during a recent game in order to determine which bat he would use during his next trip to the batter’s box.
It is difficult to ascertain exactly what kind of relevant information can be gleaned from the practice of licking a series of bats, but it did occur during the D-Backs game against the New York Mets at Citi Field on Monday evening.
“Hmm … not pine-tarry enough. Okay, this one is tastes just right.”
And for the record, Montero went 0-5 from the plate on Monday. Not good.
While the practice of licking bats is indeed gross, something tells me that if Montero has other tasting habits when it comes to game gear, we don’t even want to know how Montero goes about deciding which jockstrap he’ll wear for a game. Once again, not good.
