Kate Upton zings supposed ex-boyfriend Justin Verlander on Twitter (pic)

Rumors began swirling last fall that reigning queen of the bikini model universe, Kate Upton, was dating Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander. A short time later, Verlander’s grandfather appeared to let the cat out of the bag by telling a gossip site that the two were an item.

During Major League Baseball’s long offseason, nothing much was heard about the purported pairing, although the two were rumored to be vacationing in the same at the Ritz-Carlton on St. Thomas in the Caribbean. But as spring training heated up and the frantic fanfare surrounding Upton landing another spot on the cover of the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, speculation resumed that the two remained an item.

That is until Kate Upton issued a denial that she was involved with anyone, let alone Verlander, in an interview during her Swimsuit Issue promotional tour, saying that she was single.

Which brings us to the present day. On Wednesday, Miss Upton tweeted out a happy birthday message to pal Frank Viola III, the son of former major league pitcher Frankie “Sweet Music” Viola. What makes such a seemingly innocuous tweet to a friend so compelling, insofar as it pertains to Upton’s purported relationship with Verlander? Frank Viola III just so happens to be a good friend of Verlander. Not only that, but Upton attached a graphic that revealed much more than she probably intended it to about any possibility that she and Verlander were still dating.

The tweet in question:

Ba-zing! The original tweet has since been pulled down, replaced by a tweet without the graphical allusion to how she is better friends with Frank Viola III than she is with Verlander:

Anyhoo, any remaining possibility, no matter how remote, that Upton and Verlander remained a couple is now kaput, especially in light of the recent rumors that she has moved on and may be dating “Dancing with the Stars” dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy.

Further, Upton, regardless of whether or not she currently has a man in her life, is much more focused on getting jiggly with it on the set of her upcoming feature film. Which is nice.

Meanwhile, Verlander is having a decent season with the Detroit Tigers, albeit not up to his lofty and dominant standards, sitting at 8-5 with a 3.72 ERA. Numbers that most pitchers would gladly take, but Justin Verlander is Justin Verlander, so there you go.

Perhaps some heartache may have something to do with Verlander’s (relatively) underwhelming season? Could be.
