Mets P Zach Wheeler doused with beer by teammates after sparkling debut (video)
An unfamiliar feeling of hope for the future resonated all around the New York Mets at Turner Field on Tuesday after two young, hard-throwing arms in the team’s starting rotation came out with brilliant pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep of the Atlanta Braves.
First up was Matt Harvey, who had yet another brilliant performance on the mound, striking out 13 Braves batters over 7 innings, surrendering three hits and three runs in a 4-3 win.
Next up was Zach Wheeler, who was making his major league debut. And while Wheeler’s stat line wasn’t as gaudy as Harvey’s (6 innings, 7 strikeouts, but 5 walks), the young pitcher didn’t give up any runs in a sterling, first-time pitching performance, setting up the Mets for a 6-1 win.
Following the game, Wheeler’s Mets teammates decided to welcome the rookie to the big leagues with a beer baptism.
Could things finally be looking up for the Mets? With those two power arms in the rotation, anything’s possible.
