Bubba Watson’s golf cart hovercraft cost upwards of $20,000 to manufacture
A report from Business Week has shed some light on what was behind the video from Oakley that featured Bubba Watson tooling around in a custom-made golf cart hovercraft that went viral earlier this week. Apparently, the video simply was an attempt to promote Watson, whom Oakley signed to a sponsorship deal at the beginning of the year and there really wasn’t any intent to get folks interested in the purchase of a golf cart hovercraft.
Nathan Strange, Oakley’s head of global marketing for golf, said the idea for the video arose as such: “I knew I wanted to do a viral video,” says Strange. “We brainstormed a bunch of ideas, and we ended up with creating the world’s first golf cart hovercraft.”
And Strange says that when they brought the idea to Watson, they knew they had a winner. “Bubba was out of his mind,” Strange says. “This is the kind of stuff he loves.”

With over 4 million views on YouTube, the video took on a life of its own. Shot at Phoenix’s Raven Golf Club, it has drummed up more interest than expected in the prototype hovercraft golf cart created by Neoteric at a reported cost somewhere in the range of $16,000 to $20,000. But even the high price of the model hasn’t swayed potential purchasers of the souped-up cart. Strange says Neoteric received a call from a man in Australia who wanted to order 100 of them.
Neoteric spokesman Filip Przybysz told Business Week in an email that the company has received more than 500 calls about the video and that 150 of them were serious in nature and legitimate inquiries.
Despite the high interest in the unique vehicle created only to promote one of their paid endorsers, would Oakley be interested in branching out into the hovercraft golf cart business? “To be honest, we haven’t put a whole lot of thought into it,” says Strange. “We specialize in eyewear and apparel and footwear, so it’s not really our core competency.”
While the creation of the viral video may have created unintended results, Oakley succeeded in creating a lot of interest and pulled in a lot of views on behalf of its brand and Bubba Watson. Hopefully, if Oakley isn’t interested in the hovercraft golf cart business, some other enterprising company will get in touch with Neoteric and start manufacturing these bad boys. Not that most folks could ever afford to have one of their own, I bet a lot of golfers would be more than willing to pony up the extra cash to rent one at some high-end, first-class (and expensive) golf destination.
