Rays fan asks Elliot Johnson to play catch in parking lot on Twitter, he obliges (video)

In yet another example of how Twitter and other forms of social media has brought fans even closer to the professional athletes they admire, a simple request tweeted out by one fan hanging out in the parking lot before the game resulted in a big league ballplayer heading on out for a little game of catch.

On Wednesday afternoon, a Tampa Bay Rays fan named Chris was taking it easy in the parking lot outside of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. when he decided to shoot the following tweet out to Rays players David Price and Elliot Johnson:

Surprisingly, Johnson offered to take Chris up on the invite:

After the game of catch, Johnson took to Twitter to give Chris a hard time for inviting him to play catch even though Chris didn’t have a glove:

Chris sent an email to The Big Lead and in it, he described the once-in-a-lifetime experience:

Prior to the Rays game last night, I was with a few buddies tailgating in the parking lot. Out of the blue I posted a tweet to Elliot Johnson that I was in the lot, and to come out and play catch. He comes out into the lot, in full game gear minus the jersey (with a glove and a ball) and plays catch with us. Additionally after the game we were behind the dugout, Elliot spots us and tosses us a few game balls. What a great experience, Elliot couldn’t have been a nicer guy.

It sure looks like a good time was had by one and all. Kudos to Johnson for making the entire gameday experience a much more memorable one for a couple of fans.
