Rory McIlroy says he’d love to kick Tiger Woods’ ass at the Ryder Cup (video)
The Barclays got underway Thursday at Bethpage Black and among the marquee groupings in the first two rounds is Rory McIlroy, fresh off his PGA Championship win a few weeks ago, paired up with Zack Johnson and none other than Tiger Woods. Since golf journalists cannot help but bring up Tiger each and every time they possibly can and the opportunity was laid out for them on a silver platter in light of the two’s pairing, Rory’s press conference on Wednesday invariably involved a discussion of Woods.
At first, the discussion revolved around the duo’s pairing but when Rory acknowledged that Tiger was in the back of the room, even pausing for a moment to greet his rival, and saying he’d stop talking about Woods, someone asked about the upcoming Ryder Cup, which provided McIlroy to craft this zinger at Tiger’s expense:
“Yeah, I’d love to go out there,” McIlroy joked. “I’d love Tiger to go out first and kick his ass.”
Of course, after Rory’s smack talk — obviously in jest — someone asked Woods about his thoughts on whether or not he believed McIlroy could in fact “kick his ass” at the Ryder Cup, which will be held a Medinah. Woods, amused by his rival’s zinger, replied, “At Medinah? No.”
Ooh, it’s gonna be good stuff, kiddos. Like gladiators with golf clubs or something.
